Edgar Lopez Chavez was arrested by US Customs & Border Protection officers in El Paso, Texas with $52,072, concealed in a box of detergent, attempting to cross the Bridge of the Americas into Mexico. Chavez had traveled from Denver, Colorado, following the instructions of a bulk cash smuggler.
His automobile, a 1996 Chevrolet Lumina, contained a number of consumer products, but the Surf detergent had obviously been opened, and resealed, and it weighed more that the other boxes on board the vehicle. Chavez made a full confession, according to court filings.*
