The real reason you must always identify a Ponzi scheme: Everybody involved, even tangentially, in a Ponzi scheme can be charged with a crime after it implodes. Stuart Rosenfeldt, the last name partner in the RRA law firm, where Scott Rothstein's massive billion dollar Ponzi scheme defrauded investors who thought they were buying legal settlements at a deep discount, was sentenced today to thirty-three months in Federal Prison, followed by two years of Supervised Release. His two letterhead partners are already serving their sentences.
Rosenfeldt's direct role in the Ponzi scheme, which he denies, apparently could not be proven, to the satisfaction of the US Attorney's office; he pled guilty to illegally assembling and transmitting illegal campaign contributions on Rothstein's behalf.
The five-year Statute of Limitations on the Rothstein Ponzi scheme expires at the end of October, so we just may see one final set of indictments; stay tuned.
