The list of senior Panamanian government officials who suppressed the investigation into securities crimes involving Petaquilla Mining Ltd. stock continues to grow. Mayte Pellegrini, the former Financial Pacific (FP) employee who exposed the massive insider trading program operated at her company, for the illegal use and benefit of senior public officers, has now accused the original prosecutor of assisting in the suppression of the investigation, in what can only be described as obstruction of justice.
She has stated that the prosecutor in command at the Thirteenth Judicial District, Julio Caesar Laffaurie, not only hindered prosecution of the guilty parties, he destroyed important evidence in the case*. Laffaurie has also been accused, by Pellegrini, of ignoring a relevant report on FP, that was submitted to him by the Financial Analysis Unit, Panama's financial intelligence unit. Charges of Abuse of Authority, and Illegal Practice of Law have been filed against the prosecutor, in a criminal complaint (Querella Penal) filed in Anti-Corruption Court.
Someone needs to examine Sr. Laffaurie's finances, to ascertain whether he also has millions of dollars in unexplained wealth, meaning real estate, bank accounts, businesses, or other assets, and any suspicious assets that are found should be frozen forthwith.
* Notwithstanding the destruction of evidence, Sra. Pellegrini has advised that she retained copies.
