BOGUS NEWS ARTICLES WITH DISINFORMATION CHALLENGE COMPLIANCE OFFICERS TASKED WITH DUE DILIGENCE INQUIRIES

The level of sophistication and effectiveness of so-called fake news articles appearing on the Internet continues to pose a threat to compliance officers performing due diligence inquiries. Here is a bogus Associated Press article containing disinformation regarding nations that are allegedly now on the Visa Waiver program for admission to the United States. Note the minor error in the AP logo.

The Government of Malaysia issued a press release refuting the accuracy of the information in the article.

It has come to the point where the content of all republished news articles, including in online magazines and blogs, must be verified through other, reliable means. There is simply too much Internet disinformation posted online to do otherwise. Govern yourself accordingly.
