Pakistan's Prime Minister and his daughter |
The corrupt PEPs of the world, especially the those in the highest places, are not happy when the world press exposes their sordid private financial dealings, and the Panama Papers have named & shamed even national leaders and their families. Pakistan's Prime Minister has gone so far as to deny the truth of certain entries that detail his family's secret offshore enterprises. Truth is often the first casualty in corrupt governments.
Prime Minister Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif has rejected PP information, listing his young daughter, Maryam Nawaz, as the beneficial owner of a corporation formed by the dodgy Panamanian law firm of Mossack Fonseca; he claims she is merely the trustee. Given that we are dealing with a bearer share corporation, where there is no central registry of owners of stock, the truth is sometimes artfully concealed from the public, but if MF documents show the PMs daughter as the beneficial owner, that information exists because of an initial request by the PM, or his representative.
Perhaps Nawaz Sharif should consider tendering his resignation, like several other corrupt leaders, caught in the web of the Panama Papers disclosures, have done.
