The is the ugly face of money laundering in the Republic of Malta. FLOREN SULTANA a/k/a Florinda, accused in 2021 of laundering the proceeds of oil smuggling through two local seafood restaurants, together with a former high-ranking banker. The step-daughter of a prominent former soccer star who stands accused of oil smuggling from Libya in italy, she is reportedly an important part of a €30m fuel smuggling enterprise.
This week, one of Malta's most prominent journalists accused her of making a violent scene at the offices of his newspaper, shouting at him, and demanding that he not report on her OFAC-sanctioned seafood restaurant, Scoglitti/Porticello. Her influence is not be underestimated; posing as a former Nationalist Party member who switched to the ruling Labour Party in an electoral ad, her connection to corrupt government officials, at the highest level, cannot be ignored.
Of course, her case will probably never go to trial in Malta's totally corrupt judicial system, where the judges all owe their positions to the country's leaders, and where an archaic system of presenting evidence pre-trial allows cases to be deferred indefinitely, even for decades. This is why there is no justice in Malta, and money launderers can operate with impunity.
