FRANCE ASKS LEBANON TO DETAIN TWO TERRORISM SUSPECTS FROM 1983 ATTACKS ON FRENCH AND AMERICAN TROOPS

France has requested that the Government of Lebanon detain and interrogate two individuals who it suspects were involved in the Beirut terrorist car bombings of French and American soldiers in 1983. 241 United States Marines and 58 French paratroopers were killed in those actions, which occurred on October 23, 1983.  They are YOUSELF AL-KHALIL and SANAA AL-KHALIL.

The attackers are believed to have been linked to Hezbollah. Two senior Hezbollah officials, HASSAN EZZEDINE and ALI ATWI were reportedly previously investigated in connection with the bombings in 1997.
