PANAMA'S FORMER PRESIDENT, RICARDO MARTINELLI'S SENTENCE of 128 MONTHS FOR MONEY LAUNDERING UPHELD

RICARDO MARTINELLI BERROCAL, regarded by many to have been the most corrupt president in the history of the Republic of Panama, and who has been barred from entering the United States due to his  long history of corruption, was originally sentenced in July to a prison term of 128 months, more than ten years, after his conviction on money laundering charges in his native Panama. That conviction and sentence has now been confirmed on appeal. Note that a fine of  $19.2 million was also imposed by the trial judge, and this was also affirmed.

Martinelli still faces serious charges for taking bribes and kickbacks in the ongoing scandal involving the Brazilian construction conglomerate ODEBRECHT. His two adult sons, RICARDO MARTINELLI LINARES and LUIS MARTINELLI LINARES, are currently serving lengthy prison terms in the United States for their role receiving bribes on his behalf in that scandal, which involved major construction projects in Panama. Their case has been previously reported here on this blog, as has our extensive investigation of Ricardo Martinelli's corrupt reign as president.
