Will Malta fall into the Russian Abyss ? by COSIMO |
The bloody Russian invasion of the Ukraine has caused the nations of the world to line up on the side of democracy, with little patience for those countries that are seeking to avoid a commitment either way. Staying neutral is not an option, but the present rulers of the Republic of Malta, tied to an archaic Cold War Era neutrality forced upon it by a radical Socialist prime minister who had a love affair with authoritarian Communist dictators, and wanted to hide it behind a neutral stance, must move on to the twenty first century, lest their country be painted with a red brush. Mintoff was wrong, my friends.
Why is this a problem ? You see, Malta is literally in bed with both Russian organized crime and that country's corrupt Oligarchs. Unless it makes an immediate clean break, it is guaranteed that those clients will successfully pressure it to help them evade the universal sanctions imposed upon Russia and its institutions, and they will not take no for an answer.
The dirt runs deep; the country's arrogant Citizenship by Investment (CBI/IIM) Secretary spends more time at the Russian Embassy than he does in his office. Russian intelligence officers operate freely, with official cover, and the mercenary Wagner Group uses Malta as an intermediate operating stage for their soldiers in Libya, and rumours indicate for Mali as well.
Unless Malta changes horses, and formally abandons its bogus neutrality, which it has never observed anyway, and joins the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, its position will be seen as adversarial by the rest of the European Union, which is on an anti-Putin crusade, and could seriously damage Malta in ways that would not even have been possible six months ago, not to mention an angry United States, which could easily make an example out of a reluctant Malta. Remember the rude manner in which PM Abela treated the American Secretary of Defence ? That has not been forgotten.
Given the term War Crime has been thrown around in the media, when discussing any entity or organization that provides financial assistance to the Putin regime, things could easily go from bad to worse, without a sea change on the part of Malta's greedy, corrupt Labour Party leaders. What will it take for Malta to free itself of the Russian yoke ? NATO membership, and soon, before Malta is painted as an ally of Russia, which it certainly does not want to be seen as.
