The Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals has advised Joel Steinger, who is appealing his conviction and 20-year sentence, for operating a massive Ponzi scheme at his life settlement company, Mutual Benefits Corp., to file his initial brief by the end of January, or face an automatic dismissal of the appeal by the Clerk.
The appellant must also file any Appendix that he wishes to file at that time, accompanied by a motion, requesting that the Court accept the brief and Appendix as a late filing. It is unclear whether Steinger has abandoned his appeal, or whether his attorney is having problems handling the case. In any event, it will all be sorted out by the 31st of January, one way or the other. Steinger is known to be basically disabled, due to chronic health condition that requires constant medical care; he has been in a hospital setting while in custody. His bond was revoked when he was accused of committing health care fraud while on pre-trial release.
