UK laundryman Richard Baldwin, convicted of money laundering in absentia, was sentenced this week to five years and eight months. The defendant, who violated his bail by fleeing during his trial, laundered his clients' criminal proceeds, which they acquired through Insider Trading. An active arrest warrant has reportedly issued against him.
The defendant, a luxury watch dealer, with the assistance of others, used Panamanian shell companies, dummy invoices and offshore accounts, in a case named in the media Operation Tabernula.
While this blog has regularly had often had issues with the short length of money laundering sentences handed down in the United Kingdom, in this case, we feel that the punishment has fit the crime.
